Welcome
Recently we advised that our 2022 shows would commence later in the year with our Winter Season. It will feature three diverse performances in June, July and August. Details of those shows will be coming soon. In the meantime we have exciting breaking news! Hot from sell out shows, standing ovations and rave reviews from a three week season at the Brisbane Powerhouse - popular locally devised show A Girl's Guide to World War makes a triumphant return to its home base Maleny for TWO SHOWS ONLY on 18 and 19 March. Many were disappointed when they missed out on tickets at the two sell out performances of the show when it was last in Maleny. And I know there will be many who want to see it again! Don't miss out on tickets for these performances and make sure you tell all your friends. For those who have not renewed or become a member now would be a good time to do so and enjoy the generous member discount. We look forward to seeing you there. Peter Lavery MAC President. About A Girl's Guide to World War
This new award-winning Australian musical, A Girl’s Guide to World War, celebrates the wartime exploits of Brisbane’s first lady doctor, Dr Lilian Cooper and the trail-blazing Dr Agnes Bennett.
After sell-out shows in 2018 and 2019, the musical won the Lord Mayor’s Award for ‘Best New Australian Work’ at the Matilda Awards in 2019 - the first Sunshine Coast theatre company to win this major award.
Legendary musical theatre star Susie French (Mama Mia, Menopause the Musical, Pirates of Penzance) also won a Matilda Award for her unforgettable portrayal of the smoking, swearing lesbian surgeon, Dr Lilian Cooper. Aleathea Monsour plays Dr Agnes Bennett.
Justine Anderson and Simon Burvill-Holmes also head up the cast which is supported by a cast of young performers representing the talent of the next generation of Australian performers.
A Girl’s Guide to World War is written by Queensland couple Katy Forde and Aleathea Monsour. Katy and Aleathea are partners in love and in life.
This inspiring musical brings to life a true story. During World War One, when lady doctors tried to join the army they are told to ‘stay home and sit still’ … but they go anyway.
Leading the charge to the frontline is Brisbane’s own Dr Lilian Cooper. Dr Cooper was Queensland’s first female doctor, and Australia’s first female surgeon.
“The response to the show has been overwhelming,” says the composer Aleathea. “We want people to have a great time at the show – there’s humour, live music, rollicking adventure – but underneath that, there’s a very special story about compassion and courage. And I think that’s what audiences have embraced.” “This show is about Australian women – and specifically Brisbane women – who truly changed history,” adds lyricist and writer Katy. “These women have been forgotten, and we’re passionate about bringing them back into the light where they belong.”
